- Hard working: Cullen is very much married to his work and thrives best when he has a clear idea of what is expected of him and what he needs to do. He will stay up long hours and put most of his focus toward endeavors he believes will improve the world and help him atone for past costly mistakes.
- Loyal: If someone has his trust, he is in their court 100%. It doesn't mean he will ignore their failings. He learned a very hard lesson with that in Kirkwall with Knight Commander Meredith's madness. He is more willing to be confrontational now when he doesn't agree, but it takes a lot for him to turn his back on someone.
- Blunt: Whether this is a good trait or bad one is a matter of personal preference. He doesn't mince words and can be extremely direct and to the point. He doesn't see a need to dance around a subject and isn't the most diplomatic. Although his words are considered, they aren't flowery or sugar coated, and he frequently seeks to travel a straight line between point A and B, even if it's not the nicest way to get there.
- Tactical: One of the main reasons he was recruited to head the military arm of the Inquisition was because he is a brilliant tactician who has both the training and skill to keep up with a vastly changing sea of battle and know where and when to allocate troops and resources.
- Stubborn/Acerbic: He can be difficult to sway without solid reasoning and has a dry, sarcastic way of handling being crossed. He suffers no fools and can be rude about it if pushed.
Under pressure: Cullen suffers from PTSD which still affects his sleep to this day. Although he can handle most things that come his way with equanimity and a willingness to forge ahead, anyone trying to get into his head, anything overtly demonic, or any feelings that he is failing to uphold whatever duty he has assigned himself can cause him to have flashbacks and to withdraw into himself. Although his is harder to trigger since his time in Duplicity, it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
His usual coping mechanism for things he finds emotionally taxing is to retreat into work. If he doesn't have anything assigned to him, he will make his own work. He is a little better at reaching out to others than he used to be and has learned that it makes sense to make allies when thrown into a new world.
Condition upon arrival: He is in excellent health and shape.
Abilities:
Templar Powers:
- He can rally allies to attack with greater strength, especially when facing demons, and while using this power recovers his power to dispel hostile magic and smite them with destructive white light more quickly.
- His ability to dispel hostile magic within his range also causes massive damage in a 15 foot radius when used against a magical barrier or other enemy spell protection. This damage has the potential of friendly fire of allies within the range.
- All of his magic annulment powers are as effective on demons as they are magic users (that rely on mana.)
- When fighting with him, his allies’ strikes weaken enemies.
- Those fighting with him will fight harder when fighting demons.
- In combat, he and his allies near him are more resistant to damage from fire, ice, electricity, and spiritual effects.
- If he falls in battle, his allies have the power to fight harder for a time, imbued with some of his energy.
- He can summon a blinding pillar of white light that is incredibly destructive to demons and stuns enemies for some time.
- For each enemy that he strikes with this attack, his is healed of some damage.
- Once per combat, he can rally his allies, providing them more stamina, more energy, better defense, and damage resistance against all incoming attacks.
Fighter Abilities:
- Cullen is an expert swordsman in both sword and shield and two handed weapon attacks.
- He is a battle strategist with the ability not only to make cunning decisions on his own behalf, but to direct others on the field to be their most effective and defensive in a melee.
- He has experience in the use of siege weapons and fortress defense.
- He led a massive, successful military campaign against myriad enemies across the entire southern half of a continent, part of a multi-pronged force whose influence and power grew in a very short time.

« CHARACTER INFORMATION »
Character: Cullen Rutherford
Canon: Dragon Age
Canon point: During Trespasser, after finding the mabari but before Solas’ involvement in the rifts and the Inquisitor’s mark is revealed. A few clarifications since his history can be conditional based upon player choices: the Warden for Cullen was Neria Surana who sided with the mages at the Circle Tower. Cullen spent time in Greenfell recovering from his trauma. Garrett Hawke and his brother Carver were the Hawkes in Kirkwall. They, too, sided with the mages in the last battle with Meredith. The Inquisitor was the dwarf Edric Cadash. Cullen quit lyrium, although it is a struggle to this day. He rescued a mabari from a bored Orlesian noble and named him Blade.
OU or AU?: CRAU
Age: 34
Species: Human
AU clarification: Cullen spent a year and a half in Duplicity. Physically, he didn't have any changes beyond aging a year and is coming up on his 35th birthday. Mentally, his time in Duplicity gave him both the time and opportunity to go more in depth dealing with his lyrium addiction. He actively worked on himself and his emotional healing. He also became more emotionally open in general, a little more approachable, more comfortable with intimacy, and fell in love with Ivy Valentine. He is a little more comfortable with magic, although still unyielding about blood magic, and he is more open minded and aware about different realities since he met people from all sorts of worlds. (If he meets anyone in the game he knew in Dup, I would of course approach the players before trying to have him interact with the characters as though he had known them.)
« RECORD »
Disposition: Cullen's overall demeanor is no-nonsense, serious, and thoughtful, insofar as he seems to consider his words before he speaks and isn't quick to fly off the handle. It takes him a while to get to know someone before he'll joke around or talk about personal things. However, once he decides someone is worthy of his time or respect, he is more open and available and is a supportive friend.
